When Fashion Nova was first founded, it garnered headlines throughout Southern California as a premier provider of club apparel. Now, more than 15 years later, Fashion Nova has undergone a complete transformation to become one of the leading e-commerce and pop-culture icons in the fashion industry. Committed to becoming more than just another high-end fashion brand, Fashion Nova has partnered with several huge names in pop-culture to continue pushing and empowering progress with regard to society, gender, and social justice.

Most recently, Fashion Nova agreed to a partnership with hip-hop icon Megan Thee Stallion, fresh off her incredible night at the Grammy Awards. Megan Thee Stallion would later announce the Women on Top philanthropic outreach initiative with Fashion Nova and together the two would unveil a string of philanthropic efforts to empower and embrace women around the world.

Empowering Women

The Women on Top initiative was borne from the idea that we could all do better at empowering and supporting female-owned businesses, charities, and organizations. Spearheaded by Fashion Nova Cares and Megan Thee Stallion, the Women on Top initiative would launch itself into headlines in early March 2021 with a promise to donate up to $1 million toward highlighting and supporting women-led organizations, businesses, and entrepreneurs.

Starting off the empowerment journey, Fashion Nova’s CEO Richard Saghian took to the press to discuss his goals. Richard stated, “Women empowerment and ongoing advocacy for diversion and inclusion have always been part of our guiding principles.” Richard would go on to discuss how the program was created with the intention of giving those in need the advantage required to pursue their passions in an industry that often was not kind toward them.

Fashion Nova Cares would receive a shout-out from Megan Thee Stallion on social media when the hip-hop star said, “These donations are life-changing and will help women of all ages.” The initiative launched in March and would run throughout the entirety of the month, with Fashion Nova announcing the various winning recipients of the initiative.

The work being performed at Fashion Nova Cares is continued from the brand’s conscious efforts to commit to fighting racial inequality while also empowering women along the way. Richard Saghian recently said, “This program was created to give women greater advantage as they pursue their passions.”

Social Justice, Philanthropy, and Fashion Nova

In addition to its continued efforts in supporting women empowerment efforts through Women on Top, Fashion Nova has worked with several high-profile celebrities in order to advance prominent social justice causes through philanthropic outreach. One of the most important projects that Fashion Nova has collaborated on came on the one-year anniversary of the death of Breonna Taylor.

Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in March 2020 by police officers during a no-knock raid. Breonna, an EMT, had been sleeping in her bed at the time of the no-knock raid that would leave her dead. Her boyfriend Kenneth Walker, a legal gun owner, would be the first to wake when the raid began, experiencing at least 32 discharged bullets from the police officers — 5 of which would hit and kill Breonna. The killing would lead to nationwide protests that were further inflamed by other racially charged incidents throughout the year.

A year after the tragic loss of life, Megan Thee Stallion took to Instagram to announce her partnership in collaboration with Fashion Nova. Megan and Fashion Nova agreed to donate $100,000 directly to the Breonna Taylor Foundation a year following her tragic passing. Megan showcased the initiative through her Instagram while outlining some of the core goals and mission concepts behind the initiative.

Megan wrote on her Instagram post, “Breonna’s name continues to be a catalyst for change and a powerful reminder that justice has still not been served.” Megan would go on to announce that the donation had been sent to the Breonna Taylor Foundation which had been created by Tamika Palmer, mother to Breonna Taylor.

While Megan’s efforts have ostensibly been focused on empowering and supporting social justice and police reform, Megan Thee Stallion has reserved some harsh words for Kentucky’s first African American Attorney General, Daniel Cameron. Megan would insinuate Cameron’s culpability during a stage performance, claiming that the A.G. was “no different” because he had recommended against charging the officers with murder. Cameron would state that the officers were “defending themselves” and that their conduct was justified.

Kenneth Walker returned fire just once, shooting a bullet into the floor. He was fired upon 32 times.
